A tradition of the Carnival
'Matar la Culebra' (Killing the snake) in Puerto de la Cruz
The tradition of 'Matar la culebra' (Killing the snake) is a ritual with afro-cuban origins that landed in the Canary Islands when the local emigrants came back from Cuba. The characters of this tradition are dressed in black slaves suits, except the white foreman who orders to kill the snake ( the evil ) with his whip. Since a few years ago this tradition is in the schedule of the Carnival of Puerto de la Cruz. The procession walks from Colegio Tomás de Iriarte and ends with the last play by the Plaza del Charco.
