Cabalgatas (parades) in Santa Cruz
Masks and street Carnival
In Tenerife carnival, Cabalgatas mean Parades, and involve the groups of the carnival, spectacular decorated floats, with thousands of anonymous masks frequently driven in disparate vehicles. The street carnival begins on Friday the 12th with the 'Starting Parade', from Avenida de Bélgica to Avenida Francisco La Roche through the Streets of Santa Cruz where the party continues with fireworks, dancing balls and the contest of floats and decorated cars. In the afternoon of 'Martes de Carnaval' (Carnival's Tuesday) the 'Coso Apotheosis', takes place along the Avenues of Francisco La Roche, Jose Antonio and Marítima to finish as well with latin music at Plaza de la Candelaria. Finally, the wildest carnival parade, the Burial of the Sardine, on Ash Wednesday, with the entourage of inconsolable widows from Calle Juan Pablo II to Avenida Francisco La Roche where the sardine will burn, and of course, the party goes on.
