The “Boards of San Andrés” in Icod de los Vinos
Festive tradition of Icod de los Vinos in Tenerife North
On the eve of the Saints day San Andres, the town of Icod de los Vinos holds a special celebration. This coincides with the day the local wineries open to taste the "new wine" which is always accompanied with roasted chestnuts and salted fish. The fiesta of "Las Tablas" (the boards) refers to the local custom in which the young people of the town slide down the hill on boards greased with tar. This tradition comes from the old way of transporting wood from the higher parts of the district to the carpenters' workshops located in the lower part. Many locals and visitors gather to see this unique festival and to cheer on the daring youngsters sliding, sometimes dangerously, down the hill on their unusual "vehicles." There is always a great festive atmosphere during the day.
