Fiesta of the pot and the chestnut

Festive tradition of Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife North

The "fiesta del cacharro y la castaña" (the pot and the chestnut) is the local name for the celebration of the Saints day San Andres in Puerto de la Cruz. On the night of the 29th of November the locals meet in the central Plaza del Charco dragging their pots and other old objects behind them. The pots and objects are tied up in a wire net and the aim is to make as much noise as possible. Indeed, the noise can be deafening at times!. There is also roast chestnut tasting and other typical Canarian food available in the same square, dishes such as sea bream, mashed "gofio" (toasted cereals), sweet potatoes and, of course, local wine.
