Cueva del Viento (Cave of the Wind)

Cueva del Viento

The largest volcanic tube in Europe.

The Cueva del Viento-Sobrado (Cave of the Wind) is located in the district of Icod de los Vinos, in the northeast of Tenerife. It is the largest volcanic tube in the European Union with a length of 17 kilometres, and in its interior holds a myriad of underground passages.

A volcanic tunnel is a cavity formed inside lava flows while the lava is still flowing. The surface of the flow, coming into contact with cold air, solidifies thus creating an insulating layer.
The route begins at the Visitors Centre, from where a vehicle takes a maximum group of 14 people to a place near the entrance. You then continue on foot through farming land and pine forest along an ancient royal trail.

The Visitors Centre and the inside of the tunnel contain bilingual information panels, which offer, together with the guide's explanations, information about the cave, the lava formations and the fauna that inhabits it.
This visit, with an intermediate level of difficulty, lasts for two hours from the time of departure. You will stay approximately 45 minutes inside the cave.

IF YOU WISH TO VISIT THE CUEVA DEL VIENTO YOU SHOULD NOTE:

  • Three visits are carried out every day, from Tuesday to Saturday: at 10.00, at 12.00 and at 14:00 h.
  • The number of visitors is limited to 14 people per group, therefore it is recommended for visitors to book in advance by phoning 922 815 339.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING A VISIT:

  • You must wear long trousers, hiking boots or training shoes.
  • Always follow the guide's instructions; do not take unmarked routes or separate from the group.
  • Avoid jumping while inside the cave; the uneven floor could cause an injury.
  • Do not take your helmet off at any time.
  • If you feel tired or ill tell your guide immediately.
  • Do not drop any litter or disturb the cave in any way during your visit. Remember it is a highly valuable protected ecosystem.
  • Do not make loud sounds, which could disturb both the fauna that live in the area and other visitors.
  • No animals allowed.
  • Do not pick up anything from cave and its surroundings.
  • The guided tours are carried out with 14 people in each one. If you arrive late you will miss your chance to take part.
  • Remember access to the volcanic tube is restricted to protect the ecosystem.
  • Children under 5 years old, people with claustrophobia and those with problems in knee and ankle joints must not take part.
